Supervision in Spiritual Direction

The spiritual direction relationship focuses on the directee and his or her relationship with God. The supervision relationship focuses on the director as he or she relates to the directee. Supervision is meant to be a service to us as directors. Its purpose is to help us to recognize and explore our strengths and our “growing edges” as a director. The rela-tionship between supervisor and director, entered into with trust and openness, can free the director to be more helpful in facilitating the directee’s relationship with God.

The course is arranged by the Swedish ”Föreningen Kompass ” and Lia Gård Retreat Center. The supervision course will be led by Sister Ellen Keane together with Susanne Carlsson, Valfrid Botnen, Virve Tynne-mark and Astrid Håland Wee.

During the workshop we will explore together the many facets that are part of the supervision experience. There will be time for prayer, re-flection, interaction and opportunity for engagement in individual and group supervision, as a way of learning more about ourselves in service to others.

Sister Ellen Keane is a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur. The charism of her community is to give flesh to the goodness of God.
She has been engaged in the ministry of edu-cation for many years.

In 1981 she went to Kenya, East Africa to be-gin a Secondary School for girls in a rural part of the country. Those years were gift as she was in ministry with a people who lives of simplicity, closeness to the earth and close-ness to God touched her deeply and deepened her own experience of God and God’s goodness.

When she returned in 1993, she did a sabbatical in Washing to DC and then went for a Master’s degree in Pastoral Counseling at Loyola University in Maryland. While in Maryland she was involved in the counseling ministry as well as the ministry of direction.

Since she had no formal certificate of training, upon her return to the East Coast in 2003, she enrolled in the Practicum Course for Spiritual Directors at the Center for Religious Development and in 2004 began the Associates pro-gram, a year-long training for directors. In 2005 she was invited to come on staff at the Center where she ministered until it closed in 2009. She and her colleague continued to work for the Jesuits teaching a Beginners Course in Spiritual Direction at Boston College, offering direction, doing individual su-pervision and leading supervision groups.

In 2015 when the Jesuits moved their offices to New York, she joined anot-her colleague at the Notre Dame Spirituality Center in Ipswich, MA. Her mi-nistry here includes direction, retreats, offerings at the center, as well as individual and group supervision.

The course begins with supper on Monday July 30th. 2018 at 19:00 and ends after breakfast on Saturday August 4th 2018.
